James Hardie recognized as 2024 Eco Leader by Green Builder®
Green Builder Media awarded James Hardie with an Eco Leader Award, recognizing James Hardie among the most forward-thinking manufacturers in the business.
Throughout our company and across our value chain, sustainability is foundational at James Hardie. For decades, we have put passion and precision into creating products with true, lasting beauty for the home. From our frontline employees to the builders who use our products, each person plays a role in integrating sustainability into our culture.
In my role as Chief Sustainability Officer, I experience collaboration and cross-functional integration every day, from Research and Development (R&D) to engineering to manufacturing to finance to human resources. These partnerships drive progress toward meeting our ambitious sustainability goals, including publishing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), documents that transparently communicate the environmental impact of our products over their lifetime. I am so proud of this work, and I could not be happier to see our team and company recognized by Green Builder® as an Eco Leader in 2024.

2024 Eco Leaders from Green Builder®
The staff at Green Builder® surveyed 30 companies that have invested in EPDs and selected just ten finalists, including James Hardie. The publication said that Eco Leaders represent some of the most forward-thinking manufacturers in the business.
We collect EPDs for key materials from suppliers to support our roadmap to reduce the environmental impact of our products. We were motivated to obtain EPDs for our products for several reasons. First, we can leverage the data to understand the real environmental impact of our products. EPDs also help create a baseline to evaluate improvement in our environmental impact over time. Last and importantly, EPDs create transparency with key stakeholders, including architects, dealers, builders and homeowners. Our EPDs are third-party verified by Athena Sustainable Materials Institute.
James Hardie considers the full life cycle of the product in our EPDs, and we believe that differentiates our products. On our journey to reduce the impact of our product, in collaboration with R&D and using the EPD as a guide, we developed and are implementing our low carbon cement technology roadmap. The combination of delivering on this roadmap and our goal of 42 percent absolute reduction in Scope 1+2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will result in over a 50 percent reduction of the CO2 impact of our products.

Building more sustainable, resilient homes
Every day, the James Hardie team strives to provide solutions for weathering the challenges presented by a changing climate. It is more important than ever to choose products that protect what matters most - inside and outside your home. Hardie® fiber cement products are Engineered for Climate®, offering both resiliency and lasting beauty.
When it comes to building products and sustainability, it’s always important to consider durability. The Hardie™ Zone System provides siding options with climate specific performance formulations, creating a substrate that is specifically engineered to resist cracking, shrinking, and swelling. Because of this, Hardie® fiber cement products are built to withstand the harshest weather conditions and resist damage from fires, floods, and other natural disasters.
To us, it isn’t beautiful if it isn’t lasting. But our work doesn’t end there. We’re committed to reducing waste in our manufacturing plants, keeping our employees safe, helping build resilient communities, and innovating for the challenges facing our planet. James Hardie is committed to developing a more circular supply chain to minimize our impact on the environment and on local landfills while strengthening our business. For us, sustainability is a continuous journey – a journey without end. We’re proud of the work we’ve done, and we know we have more to do.
