Southern Living's Nashville 'Idea House' blends outdoor space with quality craftsmanship

Southern Living’s Nashville Idea House blends indoor-outdoor living spaces with quality craftsmanship.

Just outside Nashville, TN sits the new Idea House from Southern Living, a beautiful 5,600 sq. ft. home that evokes a sense of welcoming and livability to the highest degree. Its openness to the outdoors offers plenty of space for gathering with incredible views of the surrounding countryside.
The Southern Living Idea House is all about inspiration and quality. From quality products to quality construction and beyond. It’s no wonder that Hardie® fiber cement was the perfect choice for the exterior siding and trim, adding long-lasting beauty to the timeless and sustainable design.

One of the most inspiring aspects of the Idea House is how naturally it fits into the area. The emphasis on indoor-outdoor living creates a peaceful experience that brings balance to daily life. Staying connected with nature while enjoying the comforts of home is a great way to decompress. It also features an herb-and-vegetable garden for farm-to-table dining and makes use of vintage furniture to encourage sustainable choices.

We’ve been using Hardie® products since the late 1990s. It’s been on every single house we’ve built in some way for almost 30 years.

With Hardie® products, you have added peace of mind knowing that your siding will help protect your home from the elements and won’t attract pests like woodpeckers. Hardie® fiber cement is Engineered for Climate®, made to withstand the harshest of weather including storms, winds, hail, and moisture. It’s also noncombustible to help protect your home from fire. James Hardie backs up the impressive performance of their product with a 30-year limited warranty on the siding substrate.

The “Party Barn” is a unique structure which nods to the vibrant energy of Nashville. It’s a space made for entertaining, featuring double barn doors on either side and a patio with seating that overlooks the 60 acres of land. The color and texture of the exterior was intentionally designed to blend into the landscape.
The board- and- batten look is achieved with Hardie® Panel and Hardie® Trim batten with a stunning ColorPlus® Technology finish in Dark Greige. This pre-finished color is baked onto the boards at the factory, providing an extremely durable finish that comes with a 15-year limited warranty for low-maintenance, long-lasting beauty.

James Hardie sat down with the builders, Hatcliff Construction, from Southern Living’s Custom Builder Program. Husband-and-wife duo Mary and Patrick Hatcliff have been building homes together for 37 years and were thrilled to bring this Idea House to life alongside some of the best designers and architects in the business.

We try to use the best products that we can get, Hardie® [siding] being one of them. It’s been a win-win for us and our customers.
