A colorfully modern twist on tradition
Cambridge, Massachusetts might not be the first place you would think to look for modern architecture, but innovative design knows no bounds, making its way into some of the storied city’s traditional and upscale neighborhoods.
Cambridge, Massachusetts might not be the first place you would think to look for modern architecture, but innovative design knows no bounds, making its way into some of the storied city’s traditional and upscale neighborhoods.
Piatt Associates, a full-service architecture firm and architectural design consultant in Cambridge, has provided their services for more than 30 years. To create a striking aesthetic for this 10-unit modular condominium building, their architects created an alternating exposure design for the building’s exterior.
“The alternating exposures, coupled with blocks of bright colors enhanced the curb appeal of the entire building while still blending in with the Victorian and shingle styles that characterize the rest of the neighborhood,” notes Thomas Piatt, principal architect of Piatt Associates.
The architects used alternating 4, 6, 8, and 10.75-inch exposures of Hardie® Plank lap siding to create a stunning design with eye-popping curb appeal. The result is an innovative and beautiful aesthetic with a lively color scheme that suggests a collection of individual homes rather than a series of condominiums. It’s also a design that has earned the building a silver Professional Building Design award, honoring the very best in residential design.
Bald Hill Builders served as the general contractor on the project and felt working with James Hardie was an easy decision that provided an advantage from bidding throughout the installation process. “Once we’re awarded a project, James Hardie offers assistance on everything from product selection to fastening schedules. If our installers have questions, their reps are always available,” said Jessica Morrissey, operations manager at Bald Hill Builders.
If you’re looking to create a unique and modern aesthetic like this stunning condominium building in Cambridge, an alternating lap exposure can help elevate your design for a show-stopping impression.
