When it came to making design decisions for the exterior of our Blanton house, it was not a no-brainer. Sometimes you get handed a house that has well-appointed architectural details and charm, and it’s a simple refresh! This was not the case for this project. Our Blanton house needed lots of reimagining to transform the curb appeal, and we wanted to be very intentional about the decisions we made when it came to redesigning the exterior of our home.

The house was a mish-mash of materials - some original brick along with a mixed bag of different siding from a few remodels over the years. The first and easiest update was to replace all those different siding types with one cohesive choice. That choice was the easiest because we already knew we wanted to go with James Hardie.

The Hardie® Artisan® V-Groove was the perfect scale for the size of our home, and running it vertically made the overall exterior look clean, modern and updated, and was a beautiful start to the exterior remodel. The Hardie® Artisan® Siding also offers gorgeous shadow lines and extra thick boards which really contributes to the overall look of the home. My strategy is often to choose something that feels like it could have been original to the house, and that is the case here.

Next up to decide which color. I really love the faded sandy color of the brick, but didn’t want the house to be white or “white-ish”. Hardie® products offers personalized design with a wide variety of profiles, colors, and textures. If they don’t offer a color that you want in your area, you also have the flexibility to paint Hardie® siding in your preferred shade by ordering the product primed and ready for paint.

We decided to go with a dark greenish black paint color from Sherwin Williams in Rock Bottom which creates a high contrast between the siding and the brick. I think it works beautifully to match the window frames, keeping it monochromatic everywhere else! We also planted creeping fig in front on the brick, which will ultimately be mostly covered, and I love the combo of the dark tiny leaves with the siding - and watching the progress of the vine overgrowth.

All in all, this project came together beautifully, and I’m so happy to have gone with the #1 brand of siding in North America*, James Hardie!
