Plaid isn’t just for lumberjacks. In fact, you can find it sprinkled in some of the most stylish homes. There’s a reason the classic checkered or tartan pattern has stuck around—it’s timeless and sophisticated. Whether black and tan rain boots or a wool throw blanket is clad in plaid, it just gives off the feeling of downright coziness.

We’ve scouted our favorite plaid accessories, perfect for warming up your outdoor space. This winter season, we say, pack on the plaid.

If you’ve got an inviting backyard, ideal for gatherings, or a quiet front porch, perfect for morning coffee, accessorize your coveted exterior space with a few pops of plaid. Whether your style is traditional and chic, or rustic and cabin-like, it’s simple to make a statement with a plaid print (or three). You can opt for the classic preppy plaid look (think red, black, white and gold), like we’ve highlighted, or go with a pastel or neon palette for a more modern spin on the definitive look.

Adding a wool plaid throw blanket to a simple wooden bench near the backyard fire pit quickly perks up an otherwise bland space. Rope in a few complementing plaid pillows and your fireside space just became a refined spot to entertain.

Plaids are like snowflakes; each one seems to be a little different. When designing your outdoor space, don’t be afraid to mix patterns, after all you don’t want your plaid details to look too alike. But you’ll also want to be sure your patterns don’t compete for focus, which can make for an easy eyesore. When incorporating plaids to your favorite outdoor space, try to stick to one color palette. If the colors of the different plaids complement one another, you’ll likely add interest to the space without overwhelming it.

Make your outdoor space as warm and welcoming as your indoor one—pop in some standout plaids. It’s a stylish and simple way to make the exterior of your home, undeniably homey.
