Happy Thanksgiving

There’s not much better than a day centered on family and friends, tasty food and a whole bunch of gratitude. It’s enough to make you as warm and tingly as the hot toddy you’re toting. It’s Turkey day and home smells like the stuffing in the oven, there’s laughter in the air and a forkful of pumpkin pie (with homemade whipped cream) in your mouth. It’s the perfect day to stuff yourself, sit back and remember all you have to be thankful for.

Porches with Personality

Is there anything more classic than a front porch? Plunking yourself down on a summer evening after the heat of the day has dissipated, sipping on the beverage of your choice, taking in the cool air, watching the night roll in—it’s a time-honored tradition that’s as American as apple pie. But just because porch-sitting is a well-worn ritual doesn’t mean that your decor needs to be old-school. What better way to celebrate your James Hardie® siding and trim than by giving your outdoor space a fresh update—get inspired by these themed porches. With kicky new takes on vintage design schemes, they’re a great way to shake off decor ennui. Here’s a look at some of the best ones we’ve seen.

Ryan Smith on Making Beautiful Useful Sheds

It was a tiny thought—we need some extra storage space—that led to something big. Architect Ryan Smith, and his wife Ahna Holder, bought their first Seattle home in 1998. It was a 1940’s style home with an ample yard, but without a basement, garage or attic. The lack of storage space forced the couple to think fast, and Smith was about to buy a pre-made shed for the yard when Ahna quickly nixed the idea, “Wait, you have to build something,” she said. “You went to architecture school.”

It Takes a Village: An Advocacy Center Expands with the Help of Community

The Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center (CCAC) just got a well-deserved renovation—an 18,000 square-foot expansion. The not-for-profit organization mans Chicago’s frontlines when it comes to reports of child sexual abuse, as well as reports of physical abuse of children under age 3. And the center is the only one of its kind for miles that employs so many child protection staff, including law enforcement professionals, family advocates, medical experts and mental health clinicians—all under one roof.
