James Hardie Sustainability Practices Honored by Building Professionals

James Hardie leads siding category for fifth straight year

CHICAGO (June 14, 2016) — James Hardie Building Products Inc. has added another award to its long list of accolades. For the fifth year in a row, the leader in fiber cement siding and trim was named the “Greenest Siding Brand” in the Green Builder® Media annual Readers’ Choice survey.

The Readers’ Choice survey polls readers in the residential construction industry to glean insight into their green product preferences and brand perceptions. Highlighting the brand's leadership, industry professionals selected James Hardie as offering the most sustainable products in the siding category.

“At James Hardie, we pride ourselves in developing products that help building professionals craft more environmentally-friendly homes,” said John Dybsky, senior marketing manager at James Hardie. “Sustainable, efficient manufacturing remains critical to our overall success. We continue to deliver fiber cement options that last longer, require less maintenance and create a timeless design aesthetic.”

Durability, sustainability and a factory-finished coating — all of these are important factors in James Hardie’s commitment to green building practices:
  • Made from natural or sustainable raw materials including cement, sand, cellulose fiber and water, James Hardie® fiber cement products handle high heat, UV radiation and moisture exceptionally well. This can help reduce maintenance or replacements costs over time.
  • Using factory-finished James Hardie siding and trim products with ColorPlus® Technology reduces jobsite paint waste and exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
  • James Hardie has high quality standards for raw materials, and at least 75 percent of raw materials are sourced locally for the eight manufacturing facilities nationwide. As a result, there is a reduced environmental impact from transportation of materials.

“We’re constantly working to develop new initiatives and sustainable practices to reduce our environmental impact,” Dybsky said. “We’re thrilled the survey results reflect the success of these practices and our ongoing efforts.”

The Readers’ Choice survey results revealed that 91 percent of respondents agree that the quality of eco-friendly products is generally improving from year to year. When it comes to green building science, however, 92 percent of respondents believe that the industry needs more innovation and experimentation from the manufacturing side.
